Hello, and welcome to my writing life…

British climber George Mallory, when asked why he wanted to climb Everest, replied: “Because it’s there.”

I’ve been climbing for more than 20 years, and Mallory’s simple response comes to mind whenever I’m asked why I write. Because there is something inside of me that needs to be expressed and experienced and made real on the page.

I’m a past fellow in Global Journalism at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto. I’m currently pursuing my MFA in Fiction (‘27) at the University of King’s College, Halifax. I’m working on a historical novel about South Korean guestworkers, inspired by my parents. I love exploring and making sense of the world through storytelling.

My non-fiction works have appeared in Chatelaine, the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail, and others.

The advice we were given as journalism fellows was to focus on an area of expertise. As a family physician and advocate, I did write about medicine… but there were so many stories outside of medicine that I wanted to explore. Want to read about the healthcare crisis? Abandoned Japanese houses? A visually impaired Canadian woman tackling the world’s highest peaks? Click on the button below to read some of my favourite stories.
